You see, we’re growers too.

When we purchased our very first orchard (a fully enclosed under hail netting, G3 orchard), it was summer and the pollination process had already taken place using bees and dry pollination.

But it hadn’t worked. The pollination had been almost completely ineffective and our first crop wasn’t even going to cover the operating cost.

We remember standing under the canopy dropping a blanket of small stout fruit and trying salvage what we could, but ultimately being helpless and feeling utterly devastated.

This frustration motivated us to find answers to prevent this from happening again. We took a deep dive into pollination and after exhausting the Zespri Canopy website, we explored every resource we could find, be it articles or journals and then we looked to surround ourselves with all the experts we could find around pollination.

That’s when we realised that wet pollination was the future, and the seed for Prime Pollination was sewn…….

Our research quickly led us to KiwiPollen as industry leaders, we meet the crew and found a shared passion this combined with a lifetime of knowledge and experience all gained through many years of scientific based experimentation and testing this resinated and a bond was formed.

We Care Because Kiwifruit Is In Our Blood

Kiel graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked as an engineer in his former career. His knowledge and experience in science has given him a good grasp on how things work. Kiel has a true understanding of how the process of wet pollination works and strongly believes in “Honouring every grain of pollen”. He has complemented the development of the machinery initially contracting to KiwiPollen with a goal of streamlining the equipment and process of wet pollination. However, soon realised every weight saving avenue or cost saving measure was a compromise on the effectiveness of what we are trying to achieve. This is when we saw an opportunity to deliver Prime Pollination to as many growers as possible.

Charlotte was born into this industry. As one of the early industry pioneers, her family have been kiwifruit growers for more than 40 years (and still are), spanning multiple generations. They were one of the early adopters of growing G3 variety, as well as being packhouse owners and operators. From growing, picking, packing, and shipping off, Charlotte has lived and breathed this industry her entire life.
